Empowerment is the process by which those who have been denied ability to make choices acquire such ability- Kabeer (2015). We empower communities who lack basic clean water by offering long term solutions such as better hygiene and sanitation. Women and children spend an average of three to six hours per day collecting water from distant sources. Their time could be spent in other developmental activities like education, economic investiments and socialization. Women and children's self esteem improves which empowers them to do more in their communities.
WILL transforms lives by increasing access to clean water in rural communities which improves sanitation and hygiene. WILL strives to increase life expectancy by reducing water borne diseases like diarrhea, typhoid, cholera and dysentery. These kill about 3.575 million people annually (World Health Organization). Although, globally 2 billion people still use contaminated drinking water sources, we believe that WILL can help end these problems by providing clean water sources in Ugandan villages.
WILL believes in local ownership of community water wells for sustainability. Clean water is essential for development of social, economic and health systems. Resources spent on treatment of water borne diseases could be invested in other community programs. WILL encourages community maintenance of their new clean water source so that it will be available for future use.
